New York Neighborhoods Giveaway #1: HARLEM

Subway Platform, 125th Street, Harlem

One day as I was waiting for the train, two law enforcement officers approached me and queried, “Ma’am, are you at the right stop? We couldn’t help but notice that you look a little out of place and we were concerned.” I assured them that I was a local and silently wondered how they had missed the gentrification memo (j/k I'm too poor to be a gentrifier). In honor of the good times I had living there (where else will sketchy men follow you yelling ‘Goldilocks’ and ‘Snowflake?’), my next giveaway will feature the treasures of historic Harlem. From now on, my contests will highlight a New York neighborhood.

Prize package includes:

1. Pirate DVD of your choice
2. Michael Jackson glitter shirt (or non-glitter if that is too emasculating)
3. Incense
4. Obama pic (this should be easy enough to obtain, since there is one hanging in 95% of Harlem businesses)
5. Brown sugar themed novel-I don’t know the PC way to describe this genre of literature, but it is available on every street corner. A woman on the subway told me that they are really good.
6. Personalized drawing harnessing the universe to my bidding. Seriously, dreams have come true from these. If you need a refresher on my magical powers please click here.

Subject to availability: Urban tumbleweed*, fish bones, inebriated man extolling the virtues of your anatomy, pro-Mugabe poster

* Piece of disembodied weave often found on sidewalk or subway stairs

Rules: Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, contest ends November 30, 2009. To enter, please leave a comment telling me what kind of stories you like to hear (even if for some disturbing reason you don’t want to win, this would be helpful to me in general-I am sensitive to the needs of my readers). In order to win, you must be listed as a follower at left. Bonus: If you refer a friend who becomes a follower, I will put your name in the drawing four times.

  1. Oooh, glitter shirt! Who can resist that? Probably no one.

It's probably less helpful to say all of your stories are wonderful, but I prefer the ones with ironic twists. I can never get enough of that type (o:

  3. I like to hear stories about you being embarrassed. Or stories that end in the death of a distant acquaintance.

  4. More stories about the Turks!

  5. More stories about the weird things that happen to you on a daily basis. Collin can't believe/is jealous of all of the random sketchies and situations in your life. Having them in print (even if it is online) makes him believe me when I tell him about all of the weirdness from the past. Should I win I would like to respectfully decline to receive the urban tumbleweed portion of the prize package.

  6. As a spanish teacher, I love hearing about the random things you do or your students say in class. Sometimes I share them with my students. Somehow hearing about what 8th graders are doing makes them feel better about what we do in my class! I'm sure that one of my more traditional students would be much happier about the time I made them make paper sack puppets if he heard about designing fashion clothing in Spanish...

  7. Your blog is amazing as it is. However, I love reading about the weird people you met in Honduras. Do not provide embarrasing stories about me, though. I'm working on having my posse following this blog.

  14. YYYYYYYYYYES! I am so happy to have found your blog (randomly, through cjane's comment section -- you mentioned NY and I thought, "I bet I know her"). I so wish we would have met earlier during our stint there, because you are hilarious and you have hilarious stories. Can't wait to regularly catch up with you here!

  19. Love the blog Miss Jill, however, I think that my life is quite content without the Harlem swag...experiencing it on a daily basis is already good enough for me ;) however, the drawing of the future...I will take you up on that one for SURE! (that is if I win).

  20. There's really pro-Mugabe stuff floating around? I figured he was pretty much universally despised. I could go for some free Mumia stuff, though. And let's go glitter-free, not because it's emasculating, but because, as Demitri Martin says, it's the herpes of arts and crafts supplies.

I like hearing the stories that you think are funny or interesting, because I figure they'll be told better that way than if you're pandering to people who just want to win a brown sugar novel (I SO hope I win). I would prefer that at least 50% of them be current anecdotes, with an occasional BYU or Guatemala flashback thrown in.

  21. I am disappointed that you will not include in the Harlem packet both the sleeping in the train with his hand inside his underwear guy and the F word man. i think including those two would have made this packet more authentic.

  22. btw, I know I live in Harlem but I still would like to participate in this contest. and if I do happen to win, I hope the brown sugar novel's title includes the B word in it.

  23. I know this isn't actually helpful, but I love ALL your stories! It's fun to hear all the Harlem/NYC stuff, cuz it's all sooooo true. Your roommate stories are great. The random things your students do and say - also very entertaining. Pretty much your awesome, dry, sense of humor makes any story fun to read!

  25. I found your blog from a random link a friend's sister left on another friend's picture on facebook.
So...I'm kind of a creep and should definitely win Harlem-themed merchandise.
